This evening a low pressure system sits off of Cape Cod. Snow moved in the SW part of the province earlier today where winter storm and snowfall warnings were issued this morning. Snow in the Halifax area should begin by mid evening and continue overnight with blowing snow. Snow will end near noon on Friday. Snowfall totals will range from near 15 cm in town to 20 cm along the coast.
Enjoy the snow while it lasts because on Saturday a low pressure system moves out of the Great Lakes region and passes through northern NB. Rain will begin Saturday and could briefly start out as snow.

Increasing Cloud Tomorrow With Snow Beginning Late
Late Thursday a low pressure system will move to our south then east. This afternoon Environment Canada put out a special weather statement for Yarmouth and Shelburne counties. After taking a quick look at the 18Z model runs it may need to be changed to a watch or warning and expanded eastward. Will have to wait and see what happens overnight.
On Friday high pressure over Labrador moves off and on Saturday a trof of low pressure swings through giving us rain. The low pressure system has trended further east since yesterday and will have to be watched to see if the eastward trend continues.
Yet another low comes up the eastern seaboard on Monday and this system will become clearer as we get to the weekend.

Snow Changing to Rain Tuesday Morning then Back to Snow
As I have been following for the past several days, a low pressure system will cross the SW part of the province just to the west of Halifax tomorrow. It now appears that warmer air will make its way into the area allowing the snow to turn to rain for a few hours before colder air returns and the rain turns back to snow. Because of the change over snowfall amounts will be in the 5 - 10 cm range. Heavier snow can be expected to the east of Halifax, where Environment Canada has issued a Snowfall Warning. Any deviation in the track of the system will result in changes in accumulation. It will interesting to see what the 00z model runs show.
On Wednesday high pressure builds over the region, while on Thursday the low preesure system we have been watching passes to our south. Model runs keep flipping on this system bringing it closer then further off the coast. They seem to be having dificulties handling the ridge of high pressure.
On Friday that ridge will move off to our east and a low will pass to our west on Saturday allowing warm air to flood in and giving us a rain maker.
The forecast for Halifax:
Tonight snow beginning later this evening. L -5
Tuesday Snow changing to rain in the morning then back to snow in the afternoon. H 2

Keep Your Snow Shovels Handy For Tuesday
A ridge of high pressure will cross the region on Monday, while on Tuesday a low pressure system will cross the SW end of the province bringing snow beginning late Monday night. You will need your shovels for this snow with models hinting at 15 cm or more. Will have a better understanding of what will happen tomorrow, but keep it in mind for any travel plans.
On Wednesday high pressure again moves over the area and as I mentioned yesterday, it keeps a low pressure system off our coast on Thursday. Models are now showing the low coming further north. Will have to keep an eye on this as it could be a significant storm if the trend continues.

The low pressure system which gave us the strong winds today is located in the Gulf of St Lawrence this evening headed to NL.
On Monday high pressure moves in from the west, while on Tuesday a low pressure system crosses the SW part of the province giving us snow.
For the mid and later part of the week the models are not in agreement with possible systems which could affect us. One model I use has a ridge of high pressure to our north which keeps a low away from our region, while another model has the system giving us snow. Stay tuned over the next few days as the picture becomes clearer.

Rain Beginning Late Afternoon Friday
After spending the past six days at a conference in Nashville, it is great to be back and blogging once again.
It looks like a bit of a system will be over the area later tomorrow and early on Saturday. As of now I am going to call for the system to give us mainly rain here in Halifax, as there is no real cold air in place despite the cold of earlier in the week, and temperatures are to be above freezing tomorrow through Saturday.
High pressure that builds back in on Sunday will keep an ocean storm well away from our coast late on Monday.

Besides the transit strike in Halifax the big talk today has been of a storm for the Saturday/Sunday period. Models have been hinting at this for the past few days and as we get closer the forecast becomes clearer.
As of now it appears the storm will cross the eastern end of the province. What this means for us in Halifax is some snow to begin with then rain and back to snow early Sunday mornng. Over night Saturday and into Sunday morning winds will be strong.

Flurries for Thursday
Tonight high pressure that gave us a sunny day will move off to the east. A low pressure system will pass by to our east giving us flurries beginning late Thursday morning, bulk of snow will fall over the Atlantic. On Saturday a trof of low pressure swings through while a low pressure system forms off the coast. Models are still having problems with track and speed. We could possibly have snow late Saturday change to rain and possibly back to snow again on Sunday. Models are showing a more active pattern for next week. Stay tuned.

A Good Stretch of Weather Coming Up
After what seems like a month of an unsettled pattern, were we would get a day of sun then a day of rain/snow then another day of sun, we will have nearly a week of mostly sunny skies. High pressure builds in and keeps skies mostly clear with the exception of Monday when we will have cloud. The high pressure will block a couple of system from the south from entering our area. The next system is progged to arrive late Wednesday/Thursday time frame.
It will be a great time to get outdoors and enjoy all that the region has.

Rain Ending this Evening
The low pressure system which gave the mixed bag of precipitation to the region will move to our east tonight. Checking the wind direction and barometric pressure, I would say it is just south of or barely to the east of Halifax at this hour.
High pressure builds in tomorrow and sticks through the weekend giving us a stretch of good weather, something we haven't had too much of lately.
The system for later Monday I mentioned yesterday is no clearer tonight, we will continue to keep on eye on it.

Snow Changing to Rain for Wednesday
A low pressure system moving out of the Great Lakes region will be in the vicinity of the Gulf of Maine tomorrow evening. It will cross the province overnight and be off of Newfoundland on Thursday morning. Snow from this system will begin tomorrow morning. As it looks now it will begin during the morning commute, after flurries overnight tonight.
During Thursday high pressure builds in and stays with us through the weekend. As mentioned last night, this ridge will keep a low well off our coast Friday morning.
Models are pointing towards a possible low pressure system coming up from the south on Monday, but the track and timing need to be worked out.
The forecast for Halifax.

Enjoy Tomorrow, Another Stormy Friday
Tomorrow high pressure will move across the region, ahead of a low pressure system approaching for Friday.
Today's model runs have brought the two models I use closer together than they were yesterday. Because of this the picture is becoming somewhat clearer. The American model, GFS, brings the low up through the Bay of Fundy and across northern NS. The Canadian Global model brings the low through the Gulf of Maine and into southern NB. Either scenarios gives us in Halifax snow changing to rain with a chance of freezing rain during the change over.
How much snow we receive will depend upon the track and we will hopefully have a better understanding tomorrow. I will update any changes during the day on my twitter acct, with a full update tomorrow evening.
The weekend as of now appears to be warm with a mix of sun and cloud on Saturday and cloudy on Sunday ahead of possibly more stormy weather early next week.
The models are having difficulty once again handling conditions for next week so we will look at that time frame at a later date.

A low pressure system will move from northern Ontario into Quebec pushing rain and warm temperatures into our region beginning late tonight. On Wednesday a cold front associated with the system will pass through the area cooling things off some. Late Friday a low passes to our south. Models are beginning to show some consensus with his system, but they still need to get closer as one has the system further off the coast , while one shows it close to the coast with snow mixing or changing to rain. Sunday has another system with snow changing to rain.

It does appear that there will be enough cold air around so it will begin as snow before changing to rain early Friday morning. Temperatures will begin to fall on Saturday and Sunday could be the coolest day of the season. It appears another system will be moving in Monday night/Tuesday.

More Seasonable Temperatures For the Next Few Days
As most people realise we have been spoiled as of late with the warmer than normal temperatures for this time of year. Well that is about to change at least for the next few days. Tonight and tomorrow a north westerly wind will bring in colder air from central Canada. The windchill will make it feel even cooler than the thermometer says. Looks like a chance of light snow early Friday morning, and snow changing to rain for Saturday. A larger system is showing up on the models for late Sunday or Monday. The track and timing of this system still need to fine tuned, but there are a lot of model runs yet to come.
So the forecast for Halifax,
Tonight will be cloudy with brisk north west winds. L - 7
On Wednesday it will be mostly cloudy with the north west winds continuing. H -5

A Break From the Rain
The system which has given us the rain heavy at times and strong winds earlier today has moved off and skies have cleared quickly here in Halifax. Conditions over the next few days anyway should be relatively calm with the exception of a couple of systems passing to our east. Will have to keep our eyes on a system for Thursday and see how close the models bring it to the province. Models are having some difficulties with a possible nor easter for late Sunday. Will watch the charts during the week on that one.
